May 24, 1883 (The Commonwealth, a newspaper of Scotland Neck, NC, 2d page)

From “Here and There” Section

Daily Review: Robert Lane, a colored boy about 14 years of age, went to the Carolina Rice Mills this noon to carry a dinner to one of the workmen and while there had the misfortune to get his right hand caught in some of the machinery, and one of his fingers so badly mutilated that amputation became necessary. He was taken at once to the office of Dr. W. J. H. Beliamy, who rendered the necessary surgical assistance.
