May 31, 1883 (The Banner Enterprise, an African American newspaper out of Raleigh, NC, 3d page)
We learn with sadness of the death of Mr. J.L. Newsome, of Franklin, Va., who came to his death by the hand of one Slade Lewis.
[There is a Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia case, 78 Va. 732 (1884), Lewis v. The Commonwealth, in which a Salathiel Lewis appealed his murder conviction of John M. Newsome, for an event which occurred on May 21, 1883. The conviction was overturned due to a problem with the jury instructions about the communication of threats, and remanded for a new trial. I am not sure what the outcome was of that trial. While the names don’t exactly match up, the date appears to and the names are close. The appeals record does not give an indication of where that Mr. Newsome was from.]
