April 5, 1883 (The Commonwealth, a newspaper of Scotland Neck, NC, 3d page)

The jury in the case of Hannon decided that he was a citizen of the State.

(3rd column)
The “Register of Deeds Case” occupied considerable time. This was an action by John H. Hannon to oust J.M. Grizzard. Hannon was elected by the people, but, in the judgment of the County Commissioners he was not a citizen of the State at the time of his election, and they declared the office vacant and elected Capt. J.M. Grizzard. The jury, after being “hung” for several days, rendered their verdict in favor of Hannon, and judgment was given accordingly, from which Capt. Grizzard appealed.
