Augustus Jones Builds Own Bicycle From Picture in Ad, NC, 1883

year 1883

March 15, 1883 (The Commonwealth, a newspaper of Scotland Neck, NC, 2d page)

INGENIOUS–Considerable excitement was created Tuesday over a home-made bicycle. The maker is Mr. Augustus Jones, who is about seventeen years of age. He lives fourteen miles from here near Killquick.* The machine shows decided mechanical skill. Mr. Jones, we were informed had never seen one in his life. His was made from advertising cuts that he had seen. It resembles at a distance the regular Columbia bicycle. The large wheel is about the size of the rear wheel of a buggy. He came to town this morning in 2¼ hours. Tarboro Southerner

[*Killquick was incorporated in 1883, appears to have changed its name to Hickory Hill in 1885, and then to Lawrence in 1889.]
