February 1, 1883 (The Commonwealth, a newspaper of Scotland Neck, NC, 3d page, 3d column)
Mr. John W. Wood, son of our townsman, Dr. W.R. Wood, has returned home. He has been at the U.S. Naval Academy for the last two and a half years. He resigned to engage in the study of law. He will remain at home until next September, at which time he will enter the law school of our University and take his degree. We welcome him back among his many friends, and predict for him a bright future in the profession of his choice.
[In 1870, the family was in Caledonia, Halifax, North Carolina, and in 1880 they were in Scotland Neck, Halifax, North Carolina. John Wood was born about 1864 (so he would have been about 18 at the time of this article). The marriage of Dr. W. R. Wood and Henrietta Anthony was performed by Jos. Blount Cheshire, Minister of the Gospel, in Halifax, NC, witnessed by J. M. Grizzard, Deputy Clerk. I cannot find John Wood after 1880. There is a limited family tree on familysearch.org. John Wood’s ID# on Family Search is LD2L-3F5. I have attached this story to his record.]
